Course Overview
Comedy writing and Improv go hand in hand
There’s a reason some of the best improvisers are also comedy writers! (You’ll probably recognise some names on our alumni page.)
It doesn’t stop at just using improv to generate comedic ideas. Join a class to see how we can use some of your new comedy skills, theory and knowledge in a different format - the written word.
At The Free Association, we have taught comedy writing to the people at Netflix Animation, amongst a huge number of sketch performers, and comedians. We use the fundamentals of the FA’s approach to improvised comedy, and give you a clear and repeatable way to apply this to everything you write. (I didn't use it in this. Just incase you were expecting it to be funny or something)
We also partner with some of the best in the industry, so you can dive into Ben Blaine’s Screenwriting Course, or other guest classes.
Whatever you want to write - we’ve got it covered.

Improv experience will certainly help with idea generation, and creating content… However it’s not essential for our writing classes.

FA training pushes you to become a better improviser through structured courses, notes and feedback. Our teaching has been developed around a core theory and approach to improv comedy that we build upon through each class of our courses, taking you from fundamentals up to more advanced comedic techniques.
Our teachers are encouraging and supportive of learning new skills but also will give personalised notes to help you identify areas you can work on to develop further.
